HIGHER CERTIFICATE IN NURSING

The HIGHER CERTIFICATE IN NURSING is a 1 year programme.
The rationale for the qualification is to equip a nursing practitioner with the knowledge and skills to provide basic nursing care as an auxiliary nurse independently in a variety of health care settings within legal and ethical parameters.

THEORETICAL COMPONENT

Basic anatomy, physiology, biophysics, pharmacology and microbiology as applied in the provision of nursing care.
Effective Communication in a nursing context.
Implementation of Basic Nursing Care.
The implementation of basic nursing interventions to people of diverse backgrounds.
Maintaining professionalism in nursing practice within the ethical and legal framework.
Participating in addressing the needs of individuals and groups in a community.

PRACTICAL COMPONENT

A minimum of 720 hours of Work-Integrated Learning is prescribed which is compulsory.
Work-Integrated Learning takes place at the SCHOOL in our simulation laboratories (approx. 20%) and in the clinical setting (hospitals, primary health care clinics, old age homes)(approx. 80%).

DIPLOMA IN NURSING

The Diploma in Nursing is a 3 Year programme.
The rationale for the qualification is to equip a nursing practitioner with knowledge and skills to practice as a generalist nurse who will be able to meet the service delivery needs of the country.

THEORETICAL COMPONENT

The provision of nursing care throughout the lifespan in various healthcare settings.
The rendering of nursing care within a legal and ethical framework.
The application of knowledge of natural and biological sciences in the practice of nursing.
The application of knowledge of psycho-social sciences in the practice of nursing.
Pharmacology in nursing practice.
Healthcare information systems for nursing practice.
The management of a healthcare unit by implementing the management process.
The provision of reproductive health care to promote and maintain optimum health of individuals and families.

PRACTICAL COMPONENT

An aggregate of 1970 (one thousand nine hundred and seventy) hours of Work-integrated Learning spread over the 3 year duration of the programme is a prescribed.

OUR QUALIFICATIONS

LANGUAGE AND MODE OF INSTRUCTION

Instruction and assessment are conducted exclusively in English.

The delivery mode is primarily in-person, either in a classroom or clinical settings such as hospitals, clinics, or nursing homes, supervised by a registered nurse and guided by the school’s clinical facilitators.

Students also engage in blended learning approaches.

ASSESSMENT

Student progress is continuously assessed throughout the program via tests, assignments, OSCEs, and other methods.

A minimum year mark is required for admission to the final examinations.
Summative assessments, including written and practical exams, occur at the end of the academic year. Qualified students may be offered a supplementary examination.

Written exams are held at the school, while practical exams typically take place in clinical settings such as hospitals.

ACADEMIC CREDIT ACCUMALATION

Students earn academic credits for each successfully completed module.

Upon program completion, an academic record is issued, detailing all completed modules and the total credits awarded.

Students who discontinue their studies or transfer to another institution will receive an academic record reflecting the completed modules and credits earned.
No credits are awarded for incomplete modules.

PROGRESSION

Generally, students in programs of two years or longer must pass all modules, practical exams, and complete the required practical training hours (Work-Integrated Learning) before enrolling in the next academic year.

Exceptions are outlined in the School’s Academic Progression Policy, available from the institution.

QUALIFICATION / CERTIFICATION

A student is eligible to receive a qualification certificate upon successfully completing all required outcomes.

It is the policy of Thulaganyo Nursing School that no student will be denied certification for earned achievements, nor will any student be certified without meeting the necessary requirements.
